Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms: Movement, Dance and Flow

There is something powerful about moving without worrying about how it looks.

Dance can be energetic, expressive, quiet or completely spontaneous. Sometimes it gives us a way to release what we have been carrying. At other times, it simply reminds us to pay attention to the body.

This is one of the ideas that makes Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms so interesting. Rather than following choreography or learning a set of dance steps, the practice invites you to explore movement through five different rhythms: Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness. Together, they create a sequence known as a Wave.

For me, that combination of movement and awareness has always felt closely connected to how we think about comfort at Chambres: giving the body space to move, breathe and find its own rhythm.

What Is Gabrielle Roth’s 5Rhythms?

5Rhythms is a movement practice developed by Gabrielle Roth.

Instead of telling you exactly how to dance, the practice gives you a framework through which to explore movement. Music guides the experience, but there are no fixed steps that everyone needs to follow.

The five rhythms are Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness. Moving through them in sequence is often called dancing a Wave.

That freedom is part of what makes 5Rhythms different from a traditional dance class. You do not need to perform or move in a particular way. The focus is on noticing how your own body responds to music, energy and the space around you.

The Five Rhythms

Flowing

Flowing begins with continuous, grounded movement.

The body is encouraged to stay fluid and responsive, following its own momentum rather than forcing a particular shape or direction. The official 5Rhythms practice describes Flowing as connected with listening to the body and following its energy.

It can feel like a gentle way of arriving in the room and becoming aware of how you want to move.

Staccato

Staccato introduces more definition.

Movements may become sharper, clearer and more directional. After the softness of Flowing, Staccato brings contrast and a stronger sense of intention.

It can feel expressive and energetic without needing to become choreographed.

Chaos

Chaos is where control begins to loosen.

Rather than trying to make every movement look deliberate, the rhythm encourages release and a more instinctive response to the music. 5Rhythms teachers commonly describe this stage as a process of letting go.

For some people this is the most energetic part of the Wave.

Lyrical

After Chaos comes Lyrical.

The movement often becomes lighter, more spacious and playful. There can be a feeling of freedom after the intensity of the previous rhythm.

It is less about pushing the body and more about allowing movement to emerge naturally.

Stillness

Stillness does not necessarily mean stopping completely.

Movement may slow down and become more subtle, with greater attention to breath, pauses and what is happening in the body. Within the 5Rhythms sequence, Stillness closes the Wave.

Sometimes slowing down can reveal just as much as moving quickly.

What Is a 5Rhythms Class Like?

A 5Rhythms class is different from a conventional dance class because there is normally no choreography to memorise.

A teacher uses music and guidance to take the room through the five rhythms while participants explore their own movement. Classes may include a warm-up followed by a Wave through Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness.

You might dance individually, move around other people or occasionally interact with the group, but the emphasis remains on your own experience.

That means you do not need to think of yourself as a dancer to take part.

My First 5Rhythms Experience

I remember my first 5Rhythms class as if it were yesterday.

It felt like a beautiful combination of dance and art. As I moved into the second rhythm, Staccato, I became completely absorbed in the movement.

But I also pushed myself too far.

A sudden stretch and a moment of breathlessness forced my body to become still. In that pause, I realised how easily we can become focused on movement and forget to listen to what the body is telling us.

For the following days, Stillness took on a different meaning for me.

It was no longer simply the final rhythm in the sequence. It became a reminder that movement and rest belong together.

That experience stayed with me because it changed how I thought about dance. Freedom of movement is not about constantly doing more. Sometimes it is about recognising when the body wants less.

What to Wear to a 5Rhythms Class

There is no need for elaborate dancewear.

The most important thing is being able to move without feeling restricted.

Soft fabrics, comfortable waistbands and clothing with enough stretch can make it easier to move through everything from grounded Flowing to more energetic Chaos. Layers are also useful because body temperature can change throughout a class.

For this reason, pieces such as Grace Pants work naturally for movement. Their flowing leg and stretch allow the body to move without feeling restricted, while the breathable fabric makes them practical for longer periods of wear.

Kelly Kimono Maxi can work as a light layer before or after movement. Its relaxed fit and breathable fabric make it easy to put on when the pace slows down.

For someone who prefers to move in a dress, the Joy Maxi Dress has a flowing silhouette, stretch and side slits that allow freedom of movement. Its reversible design also makes it a piece that can move easily from relaxed wear into an evening look.

Movement and the Chambres Approach

Movement has always been connected to the way we think about clothing at Chambres.

A garment can look beautiful, but if you are constantly adjusting it, pulling at it or feeling restricted, you become aware of the clothing instead of the experience you are having.

That is why softness, stretch and movement matter.

Our loungewear is designed around that same idea: clothing that can move between home, travel, work, evenings and slower moments without feeling overly structured. Pieces such as flowing pants, kimonos and soft dresses allow the body to remain part of the experience instead of fighting against the garment. The current Chambres collection already positions many of these pieces as day-to-night clothing.

Finding Your Own Rhythm

One of the things I appreciate most about 5Rhythms is that there is no perfect way to move through it.

One day Flowing may feel natural. Another day you may connect more strongly with Staccato or want to disappear completely into Chaos. Sometimes the most important part of the Wave might simply be reaching Stillness.

That unpredictability is part of the experience.

The body changes from day to day, and movement changes with it.

Perhaps that is the simplest lesson to take beyond the dance floor: pay attention, move when you want to move, slow down when you need to slow down, and give yourself enough space to find your own rhythm.
